Night Shifts and the Gut: Your Internal Clock Has Not Changed Shifts

Three in the morning, the ward or warehouse is quiet, and the vending machine is the restaurant. Night workers know this hunger. It is real. It also arrives at a time when a sensitive gut tends to be less forgiving of a large meal, heavy fat, and a fifth coffee.

When you eat, not just what

Have the main meal before the shift or at its beginning, while the body is still close to evening. In the middle of the night, have a small portion, not a delivered schnitzel because "I deserve it." You do. The price arrives in the morning, precisely when you are trying to sleep and your stomach starts a meeting. Sleeping after a large meal is poor even without a sensitive gut. With one, it makes for a short night and a long day.

Stop coffee several hours before planned sleep, even if bedtime is ten in the morning. Coffee does not know the shift has ended. It knows caffeine.

What is in the drawer, not the machine

A packed meal from home, just like an ordinary day, only at a different hour. A familiar carbohydrate, protein, a little fat. The machine sells quick sugar and sweeteners. Both have already appeared as triggers in many people's diaries, precisely at an hour with no energy left to argue. Preparing food at home gets ahead of your tired self. The tired self always loses the argument.

Sleep as part of gut care

A dark room, the same bedtime even during the day, not scrolling until noon because "the schedule is already confused anyway." Disruption of the body clock affects bowel movements in some people as much as food does. If possible, do not turn days off into a completely reversed night. A sharp switch twice a week is a strain in itself. You cannot always choose. You can avoid adding a new diet on top of it.

The three-in-the-morning coffee

On a night shift, coffee is a friend. It is also a stimulant. A cup on an empty stomach at three in the morning gets many people's bowels moving just when the ward is busiest. Have a small bite beforehand, and leave several hours between the last cup and morning sleep. We describe a one-week experiment inCoffee on an Empty Stomach.

Morning sleep

Returning from a shift and sleeping in the morning sunshine means poorer sleep, and a tired stomach tends to be a sensitive one. A blackout curtain, a silent phone, and a small, light meal before bed. The night, even when it happens in the morning, affects the following day. We discuss this connection inSleep and Abdominal Pain.

What about days off between shifts? Try to keep mealtimes close to what the body has become used to, rather than suddenly jumping back to an ordinary day. The gut adjusts slowly in both directions.

When it is not "just the shift"

Blood, weight loss, pain that wakes you even after a long sleep. Night work explains a lot. It does not explain everything. A doctor who hears "I work shifts" still needs your diary, not just your job title.
