The Doctor's Appointment: Ten Minutes That Do Not Go to Waste

The appointment was booked months ago. The night before, you remember everything. In the chair across the desk, you remember the parking. It is not nervousness. It is overload. Someone arriving with a short page is not braver. They simply do not leave their story to memory.

What goes on the page

The start date of the current symptom, not "I have always had it." The number of bowel movements on a bad day and a normal day. Blood, yes or no, and when. Weight if it has fallen unintentionally. Medications, including anything bought independently. Any medication allergy. One question you want answered, not five. Five will be deferred. One will be answered, and you can ask more if time remains.

A week-long food diary only if the question concerns nutrition. Two handwritten months will not be read. A clearly marked week will.

How to begin

"Three weeks of pain after dinner, twice a night to the bathroom, no blood, and I lost two kilos without dieting." A sentence like this moves the appointment forward. "My stomach does not feel good" moves it toward the end, a general direction, and perhaps another test. Details first. Feelings afterward, if needed. Feelings matter. They simply do not sort out which tests are needed.

What to ask to have written down

The next step, and who calls if the test comes back abnormal. Leave with a sentence, not just a sense that somebody nodded. If medication is suggested, ask about spacing it from food and when to return if there is no improvement. Without this, home becomes an experiment.

Tests you have already had

Bring your latest results, even if the doctor can see them on the computer. Sometimes tests performed elsewhere are not visible. Mark in advance the lines you want to ask about. We explain how to read a blood-test form without panicking inReading a Blood Test Without Fearing the Highlighted Line.

The medication list, including supplements

Everything you take, with dose and time. Include vitamins, supplements, and herbs. A doctor who does not know about a supplement cannot identify an interaction. If there is a question about timing in relation to food, now is the time to ask. We outline the questions inGut Medications and Food.

Who comes with you

Another person in the room hears what you miss. They can take notes, ask the question you forgot, and remind you afterward what was said. It is not required. But at an important appointment, it helps.

If time runs out halfway through

Arrange a follow-up or send a question through the health fund's system the same day, while the page is still in your hand. By tomorrow, the wording begins to fall apart. You can ask for a dietitian through the health fund if food has become a minefield. The doctor manages the evaluation. The dietitian manages the plate between evaluations.
